Beneath the Weather is a place for talking honestly about the hard stuff that happens to humans. People aren’t that great at this which is odd because hard stuff happens to everyone all the time. This isn’t a pity party – its purpose is to show up for collective moments of joy and pain and bear witness to inextricable human connection. Being alive can be tough even on a good day so when things turn to shit, the best thing to do is chat it out.
My roles in life are mostly mother, fashion academic, small dog enthusiast and lover of RuPaul’s Drag Race. My newest role is as carer to Greg who was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in November 2016. He was diagnosed on Bay’s 1st birthday and started chemo on his 40th birthday so two parties to cancel within a few weeks of each other. Oh, and Little Milk went blind in the same month.
I started the crowdfunding campaign Give4Greg to raise money for treatments not available on the NHS. The campaign went viral with 24k shares and hitting the initial target of £100,000 in 48 hours. It has since raised over £200,000. We are overwhelmed by the love and generosity of those who have helped us raise this money.
I also work with Bowel Cancer UK, in particular with their Get Personal campaign which helps patients navigate advanced cancer treatments in the UK.
